I was born into a large and lively family in a small town in northwestern Ohio.
After graduating from college, I worked for several years as a reporter and photographer at a small daily newspaper in central Ohio, The Celina Daily-Standard.
After moving to the Sonoran Desert city of Tucson, Arizona I completed a Master’s degree in political science before returning to the Midwest for my Ph.D.
While at Indiana University I met Marilyn Grobschmidt, whom I married after moving to Boulder, Colorado. I returned once again to the Midwest to teach for a time at the University of Illinois, before taking a position at Spring Hill and settling here on the Gulf Coast. I enjoy music (especially jazz and blues), film noir, modern art and maintaining my bamboo grove. My wife and I have a dog and a cat.
