COURSE DESCRIPTION: The focus is on health promotion and maintenance in the childbearing family. Nursing theory and nursing process are utilized to promote health and provide care to the pregnant woman and her family in a variety of clinical settings.

OBJECTIVES:

By the completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of essential anatomical, physiologic, and psychological factors influencing maternal and fetal adaptations to the childbearing process
  2. Promote and maintain health with childbearing clients form diverse populations.
  3. Discuss the historical, political, social, economic, ethical, technological and legal components as they impact the childbearing years.
  4. Integrate professional accountability, critical thinking skills and management principles when collaborating with other health professionals caring for the child bearing family.
  5. Discuss caring, ethical and moral values related to professional nursing roles designed to meet current and emerging needs of the childbearing family.
  6. Discuss the role of the professional nurse in the formulation of health policy related to childbearing.
  7. Identify the leadership, management, and teaching roles of the professional nurse in childbearing settings.
  8. Use knowledge of biologic and behavioral newborn characteristics as a basis fro assessment and care of the newborn and support and education of the parents.
  9. Demonstrate understanding of risk factors and complications affecting childbearing women and their newborns.

TEACHING STRATEGIES:

Lecture, discussion, audiovisuals, role play, computer assisted instruction, clinical practices, and post conferences.
