COURSE: NUR 320: Childbearing Family

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The focus is on health promotion and maintenance in the childbearing family. Nursing theory and nursing process are utilized to promote health and provide care to the pregnant woman and her family in a variety of clinical settings.
OBJECTIVES:
By the completion of the course the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of essential anatomical, physiologic, and psychological factors influencing maternal and fetal adaptations to the childbearing process
- Promote and maintain health with childbearing clients form diverse populations.
- Discuss the historical, political, social, economic, ethical, technological and legal components as they impact the childbearing years.
- Integrate professional accountability, critical thinking skills and management principles when collaborating with other health professionals caring for the child bearing family.
- Discuss caring, ethical and moral values related to professional nursing roles designed to meet current and emerging needs of the childbearing family.
- Discuss the role of the professional nurse in the formulation of health policy related to childbearing.
- Identify the leadership, management, and teaching roles of the professional nurse in childbearing settings.
- Use knowledge of biologic and behavioral newborn characteristics as a basis fro assessment and care of the newborn and support and education of the parents.
- Demonstrate understanding of risk factors and complications affecting childbearing women and their newborns.

TEACHING STRATEGIES:
Lecture, discussion, audiovisuals, role play, computer assisted instruction, clinical practices, and post conferences.
EVALUATION:
Examinations, written assignments, clinical self and faculty evaluations
The student must achieve a passing grade on (76%) on theory and a passing clinical grade to complete Nur320. Grades are based on the following scale: 69-75=D 76-83=C 84-92= B 93-100=A. Clinical grades will be Pass/Fail. To achieve a pass in clinical the student must:
1. Obtain an average of 76% or better on written assignments
2. Demonstrate satisfactory clinical competence. (see clinical evaluation tool.)
ATTENDANCE Policy: Clinical attendance is mandatory. Should a student have a situation which precludes the student from attending a clinical experience (e.g. illness, jury duty, etc.), the faculty member must be notified prior to the experience. Based on the faculty member’s evaluation, one of the following outcomes will occur for missed clinical days):
The student will be excused.
Clinical make-up day (s) will be scheduled.
The situation or duration of absences will necessitate that the student withdraw from the course because of inability to meet course clinical objectives.

Make Up Exam Policy: The student must notify the faculty member before the exam is missed . The student has 48 hours after the class period to arrange for a make-up exam with the faculty . The make up exam must be made up with in two weeks.

Clinical Sites:
Clinical Requirements:
All students are required to carry professional and personal liability insurance. Students are expected to show proof of current coverage.
Students will be expected to show proof of current CPR certification
Each student shall show evidence of a current physical examination on the approved physical exam school form
Each student must meet the agency health requirements related to caring for patients in the clinical area.
Any student with a Herpes Simplex (Type 1) lesion on the mouth will not be permitted in the clinical area
Students who are exposed to chickenpox virus who do not have immunity will not be permitted in L & D, PP, and nursery for ten days from the day of exposure
Students are expected to follow procedures utilizing the CDC and OSHA guidelines in clinical practice.
