The Ohio Anshutz Documents

Phillip Anshutz Was a brother of George Ludwig Anshutz and came to America from Alsace at the same time George did. While he mostly resided and died in Pennsylvania, various of his children moved to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and even to New Orleans, LA. This is a rather small group of documents. If anyone has scans or photographs pertaining to this or any other family group I would be happy to add them to this site with permission of course. Send me an email!!

Letter from John Anshutz, Morefield Switzerland County, Pleasants Township, Indiana to Philip Anshutz, Clearmont, Goshen, Ohio

Sunday evening May the 26th 1834(?) (note: it looks like 1832 on the letter, but the address side clearly says 1834.

Dear Brother

I take my pen in hand to inform you that we are all well at this present time and we are in hopes that this may find you all enjoying the like blefsing. I received your letter dated the 14 of aprile which conveyed to our knowledge a lamented late Sircumstance. We feel truly sorry for you but when you think on that sorrowful event you should also reflect that it was the almighty that gave him to you and it is him that recalled him from a world in which there is is nothing intising and that also before he knew Sin or its bitter consequences. O Philip that is a consolation indeed and not to fret or repine at the decrees of God. I think we should always be resined to the Will of Providence. There was a family within about 5 miles of us that had but three children and they all three died in one week by the Scarlet fever which was thought by some to be the French measles but be it what it might it removed a great many children from the Shores of time.

I suppose that you think I have no feelings but I have as warm a heart as any of you but sir you should recollect that I have ben treated with the greatest neglect by every one of you ever since I have ben here. I wrote to Andrew ones since I was here but it was not thought Worth while to give me an answer. Then after that your child was removed you never so much as thought it Worth While to inform us of it for near twelve months. Now I will drop this subject.

I have planted about 14 acres of corn this Spring and last fall I put out about ten acres of wheat but that looks middling indifferent yet if the season suits from this time forward I Shall have enough to do myself.

Nancy sends her love to you both and I want you to give our love to mother and Nancy and to Andrew’s family. I want you to write to me Directly and inform us of all the marriages and deaths that have taken place since we left there and Strange events that may have happened.

Tell mother that one of us Will be up for her some time in June so that she may be ready come along with which ever of us my happen to come.

Write to me soon and direct your letters to Morefield Switzerland County Pleasants Township Indiana.

                I add no more

                                But remain the same

                                                Old

                                                John Anshutz

***Note: from this letter it appears that Philip had a son (he) who died perhaps at birth or at least soon after (before he knew sin) which wasn't reported to John (in letter of 14 Apr 1834) until near 12 months had passed (and John wasn't shy about expressing his opinion on the affront!), which would put the death about April or May of 1833. Is this a child of which we were aware?
