Keys Marine Lab

Our base of operations for the field course was the Keys Marine Laboratory, which is located on Long Key. KML is the former Sea World Shark Institute. It was purchased by the State of Florida and converted into a marine lab and education center. | ![]() |
| One of the most distinctive features of the lab are the series of 30" deep interconnected outdoor in-ground research and holding pools (right). These pools contained a variety of marine life, including a group of nurse sharks (shown below). | ![]() |
KML has air conditioned dormatories capable of accommodating up to 27 people, one of which is shown above. The air-conditioned dormatories include kitchen facilities. Did I mention they were air-conditioned? |

The facilities include a wetlab (shown below), a drylab (on the right), classrooms, outdoor research tanks (below left) and touch tanks (below right). | ![]() |
